Is Labor Day Passe

July 23, 2008

In a word, yes !

Labor Day, which started in 1882 to honor "the working man" or "little guy," has dengenerated into one of many meaningless paid employee holidays, and it is celebrated now by sailboat races, family picnics, and shopping sprees.

Labor Day is a marker, signifying that summer is supposedly over, even if it’s still 90 degrees outdoors.

Pools must be drained, boats winterized, and summer clothing put away until July 4 next year, Independence Day–the marker indicating the official beginning of summer.

The 1800’s leaders of the Central Labor Union and Knights of Labor, initiators of the Labor Day concept, would be horrified to experience Labor Day 2005, especially people buying affordable, Chinese made clothes at Wal-Mart.

Clearly, today’s shoppers do not "look for the union label" or even know what it is.

The Industrial Revolution brought many abuses of employees, and labor unions were an excellent short-term remedy.

Kenny Rogers’ song lyrics, "you gotta know when to hold them, know when to fold them" applies to unions.

They’re folding due to their own self-destructive approaches as well as workplace developments they cannot control.

The Art of Giving a Toast

July 18, 2008

Today one of my clients is throwing one of her good friends a 40th birthday party. She actually used to date him and now they’re good friends. She has the perfect dress, has supplied the beautiful country club for the party and now she was considering whether or not she should also give a host!

My answer to her? ALWAYS give a toast if you can!!!

First of all, whoever is throwing the party has a responsibility of welcoming people to the event. It’s nice to publicly introduce yourself and welcome everyone. It also establishes your credibility when you speak in front of people

Next, it’s an opportunity to show off! When people see you completely composed in a somewhat stressful situation, they’re impressed. Little do they know how much preparation when on behind the scenes. You can make it look like you pulled the toast out of thin air!

When writing a toast, there are a few things to do that will make your job easier.

How do you want to come across? Do you want the toast to be fun, lighthearted and funny or do you want it serious? This will help you determine the "story" that you share during the toast.

Christmas Gifts For Bird Lovers

July 18, 2008

Choosing gifts for any animal lovers can be quite a pleasure, as it is often a gift that is shared by the recipient with her animal friends or pets. This is especially so with bird lover gifts. People who really love birds tend to want them to enhance their gardens, to encourage real wild birds to visit time and again, or even stay for the breeding season.

A gift for a bird lover can therefore be a gift of life, a promotion of nature around the home, visible from the windows or while tending the garden. Encouraging wild birds to their gardens is something that millions do in the northern hemisphere, especially in the winter when many wild birds suffer from food shortages.

At Christmas, cards are commonly adorned by robins, their red breasts contrasting so vividly with the white snow. But that pretty picture can be deceiving, with the harshness of winter depriving the robin and other resident birds of the sustenance and warmth they need to survive until spring. It is that threat that brings out the best in bird lovers through those winter months.

How to Plan a Cheap Vacation in the Bahamas

July 17, 2008

A trip to the Bahamas does not have to also mean a trip to a loan officer. The beautiful islands offer vacations for every budget. Even those with little to spare can make their way to the white and pink beaches by finding a cheap Bahamas vacation online. Websites such as Priceline and Hotwire are great places to start looking for a cheap Bahamas vacation These websites generally offer all-inclusive vacations, which helps to make the shopping experience easier. There are also plenty of other, lesser-known websites where travelers can find amazing deals on rentals, plane tickets, and more.

A cheap Bahamas vacation rental does not have to mean a lower standard of living. Consider Cookies Cabanas, a guest house on the beach of Cat Island. The home features a bedroom and bath with a double bed plus a hideaway bed and sits just 20 feet from a restaurant. Even better, this vacation home is only $90 per day. This low-priced home sits on an island considered one of the most beautiful in the Bahamas with high cliffs, densely-forested foothills, and 60 miles of deserted pink-and-white sand beach,. In addition to cheap Bahamas vacation rentals, the Internet also offers many Bahamas vacation deals. Once again, vacation websites such as Priceline, Hotwire, and Orbitz are always publishing new Bahamas vacation deals. These websites often have last-minute vacation deals that offer spur-of-the-moment travelers a lower-price airline ticket so that the airline company can sell as many seats as possible.

Relaxing Holidays - Five Ways To Make Your Next Holiday Stress Free

July 16, 2008

For many people the end of a year is a time of increased stress. Instead of relaxing and unwinding from a busy year, the pressures of buying gifts, travelling or spending time with long lost relatives makes it a difficult time.

In our household for example, my 4 year-old daughter’s excitement levels have been taken to new highs by performing in front of 800 people as a ‘teddy bear’ in her first ever ballet concert.

Loaded on top of this was her Kindergarten show, this time performing the role of an ‘angel’ in a Nativity Play, and counting down the days to our four-week trip to Tasmania.

Just yesterday, she woke at 5.15 am and started packing her bags to go. I smiled when she told me she had packed 8 videos for the trip!

Now I’m really looking forward to our holiday and spending time at Freycinet Lodge on the Island’s east-coast, feeling the crunch of pristine white sand under my feet at Wineglass Bay, watching the sun set over the pink granite outcrops of ‘The Hazards’ and tasting the fresh salty tang of locally grown pacific oysters.

Fathers Day and Flowers

July 15, 2008

Father’s Day is about to be celebrated in Australia. The first Sunday in September.

Now traditionally Father’s Day is not associated with flowers. Why?

Mainly because fathers grow flowers and so most consider Dad wouldn’t like to get flowers as a gift.

This is in many cases not true. Dads are male and many, many males get a real kick out of getting flowers.(They aren’t known to include them on their “wish list”).

Think about it for a moment. You buy Dad socks and jocks and wonder, what else?

Well, why not take the socks and jocks along to your friendly florist and see what she or he can do with them. You will be amazed and your Dad will feel so special.

There are so many flowers, we florists call “Macho Flowers” Imagine your socks and jocks sitting amongst wonderful big red and orange gerberas, tropicals, like heliconias, gingers, bird of paradise, iris, proteas, banksias in a timber box he can use later to carry his essentials out to the patio to cook on the barbecue.
