The Cheapest Christmas Ever!
May 30, 2008
Have you ever said “I wish we didn’t have to spend so much money on Christmas?” or “I wish we could have Christmas without going into debt!” Well here is your answer - tell your family that next Christmas no one is allowed to buy a new, expensive gift for anyone! Yes, I really said that. Tell them that all presents must be from garage sales, tag sales, yard sales, auctions, handmade or made over.
You really need to start now, or start next spring/summer, hit all the garages sales and auctions that you can. Find items that your family collects, things from sports teams that they like, such as T-shirts with silly sayings, posters, glasses, etc. Pick up craft items that will look cute around someone’s home. You can find games for the kids by the carload and puzzles abound for that person who lives to do puzzles. You won’t believe how many golf clubs you can find, bicycles, tricycles, baby toys and clothes. You can find records, cassettes and videos (old classics make great gifts). Did you know that a 45 record of Elvis in the cardboard cover was found for a quarter recently and a collector offered the person $150.00 for it. Think how many gifts you can collect over the summer for a quarter to a dollar. The person who collects cats or bears can double their collection just from items you find. You will be amazed at the silly things you can find at garage sales for that special brother, sister or best friend.
The Charm of Pigeon Forge Chalets
May 29, 2008
A chalet is a traditional Swiss style house with a sloped roof and wide eaves. Chalets originated in Switzerland and regions near the Alps. Chalet style dwellings spread to the United Kingdom and other European countries in the early to mid twentieth century and chalets are now common in American ski resorts and other vacation destinations.
Many beautiful and unique chalets are available for Pigeon Forge lodging. Chalets come in many sizes, from one bedroom to over seven bedrooms. Pigeon Forge chalets are a unique alternative to more typical cabin lodgings. Chalets offer the same amenities and benefits as cabins, but have a certain unique European charm.
Many Pigeon Forge chalets include decks with mountain views and outdoor hot tubs. Chalets with these amenities are perfect for honeymooners or other romantic getaways. Most Pigeon Forge lodging is located minutes away from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, providing access to many exciting and romantic activities like hiking, sightseeing, and gift shopping.
Since Pigeon Forge is a small town, even secluded chalets for honeymooners are not too far from the theme parks, restaurants, and outlet malls that make Pigeon Forge famous.

Celebrate Parks Day, Everyday this Summer!
May 26, 2008
Canada’s Parks Day falls on July 16′th this year. First celebrated in 1990, Parks Day is an opportunity for individuals to participate in hundreds of unique and fun events taking place in sites from coast to coast. Events are organized in national parks, national historic sites, provincial parks, and territorial parks, as well as in community and regional parks across the country.
Increasingly regulated and restricted, the dwindling islands we like to call parks are more precious than we could possibly realize. Although having a special day to honor them is fantastic, there really should be a year-round awareness to maintain and keep them clean and garbage free. When we make an effort to keep trails and waterways clean we see measurable results in a healthier and safer environment for wildlife and humans alike to enjoy. Many communities rely on tourism and a clean pristine park will entice tourists to return and mention it to others.
Parks and trails with trash bins are less likely to have litter lying around the grounds. Get in the habit of always packing a supply of bags to pick up any stray litter you might find along the way. Rather than walking by trash and fretting about it ? pick it up and be proactive! It is surprising how good it begins to feel when you make a difference.
A Christmas Tradition - Vintage Ornaments
May 25, 2008
Traditional hand-blown glass Christmas ornaments never seem to go out of style. There is something special about them: pulling them out year after year and smiling at the memories they bring back. Putting up familiar Christmas ornaments is one of the rituals that make the holidays special. This month we’ll talk about vintage Christmas ornaments.
Hand-blown or machine-made.
A hand-blown glass ornament is one of the indicators that it may be vintage. However, hand-blown ornaments using vintage molds are still being made today. To find out if an ornament is hand-blown, remove the stem from the base of the ornament. Ornaments that are hand-blown will have an uneven base because it is not possible for a glass blower to make an even break. Machine-made ornaments will have a smooth even base. If an ornament is machine-made, it may not be particularly old.
Big or small.
Early ornaments were smaller than modern ornaments. They were usually done in soft colors with hand painted details. You’ll notice that the paint may be faded or distressed in areas on vintage ornaments. Look for round ornaments in a variety of diminutive sizes, reflector ornaments, unusual shapes or ones that represent food. These were the common themes for older ornaments.

The History of Christmas Ornaments
May 24, 2008
History of Ornaments
In A.D. 336, an early Roman calendar first mentions December 25 as the date of Jesus’ birth. This date was likely influenced by the year-end pagan festivals to celebrate the harvest. Celebrations included specially prepared meals, decorating of homes, gift-giving and singing. Gradually, pagan traditions became a part of the Christian celebrations. Most Christmas traditions such as the Christmas tree and ornaments came from central Europe. The earliest German Christmas trees were decorated with food; apples, onions, pears, nuts, candies, and fruits were placed on a tree.
In the 1800s, glass ornaments were first made in the Lauscha, Germany. This cottage industry involved the entire family. Generally, men did the glassblowing, women did the silvering and the children helped to paint and finish them. These beautiful new glass ornaments began to replace edible decorations.
In Victorian times, Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, a German, brought the tradition from Germany to his new home in England. Soon all of England was in on it.
In the 1840s, Europeans immigrating to North America brought with them their Christmas traditions. Prior to that time, Christmas was not widely celebrated in North America. As society became more prosperous, ornaments became larger in size and the colors become more vibrant to reflect the new wealth.
